VMware is deprecating 3th party vSwitches!

Last weekend VMware announced it will remove the API’s for 3th party vSwitches (like Cisco Nexus 1000v and Cisco Application Virtual Switch) with vSphere 6.5 update 2!

There were rumours for years, but now VMware  has finally set concrete steps, by announcing it will remove the API’s for 3th party switches. VMware will push customers to the VMware Distributed vSwitch (DVS) or the VMware NSX platform,:a big vendor lock-in.

I think VMware has a dominant place in the virtualization market, but customers that are running 3th party vSwitches will not be happy. VMware could receive a lot of negative response on this step.

In Next Generation DataCenters integration is a key-buzzword: VMware apparently has another vision on NGDC, combine this knowledge with the high price of VMware what will push customers to other virtualization-platforms.

At this moment it’s only an announcement, and the API’s are still their. VMware will get a lot of negative response and maybe VMware will come to their senses (like the vRAM-licensing debacle long time ago).

The entire announcement can be found here, https://blogs.vmware.com/networkvirtualization/2017/03/native-vswitch.html#.WNuoQTt953g, and states that VMware will also support the use of the Open Virtual Switch (OVS). This OVS is already being used for example in OpenStack and supported with NSX-MH and NSX-T.

Maybe Cisco (and other vendors) should have already migrated or start migrating to the OVS instead of complaining?

On another note, if integration is the keyword why does Cisco not support hardware VTEPs with NSX like almost all the other big networking vendors? I know this is possible if you are using the right hardware and software, so technically it is supported. But why is there no official statement for support, maybe something political?

You’re right about the support for the Open vSwitch and I agree that it is something political.
